The movie Forrest Gump, released in 1994 and directed by Robert Zemeckis, starts off with a young boy with a low I.Q and wore leg braces because he was born with a crooked spine. Forrest is a man of good intentions, and throughout the movie, he faces many tribulations but never lets it interfere with his happiness. Gump has had several setbacks in his life which gave him a disadvantage. But he manages to turn the setback into something beneficial to him, such as when he took his leg braces off and outran the bullies chasing him with their bikes. After going through the setbacks, Gump played at the University of Alabama, won a football scholarship, served in the Vietnam War (saving many soldiers lives), and ran everywhere in the United States because he wanted to escape from the worlds twisted reality. While Forrest became successful in his endeavors, the most complicated task was to win the heart of his childhood friend Jenny Curran. For all the tribulations and challenges that Forrest went through, he only thought back to Jenny and how she is very important in his life. Although the movie starts off with the two childhood best friends, the movie shows that they gradually grow apart from each other. Jenny had a messed up childhood with Forrest being the only escape from her abused life. Even when they both grew up to be adults, Forrest Gumps love for Jenny never wavered and stayed unselfish. Forrest never had any ulterior motives when it came to conveying his true feelings. On the other hand, Jenny is shown to be in various relationships throughout her life. Ironically, her relationship was filled with selfishness and lies which completely went against Gumps actions. The most iconic line from Jenny, run, Forrest, run, is when she yells at Forrest to run away from the boys chasing after him while the camera zooms in on Gumps leg braces coming apart; showing that his disability will not slow him down from reaching his goals in life. The iconic line is also ironic as Jenny tells him to run, but foreshadows her figuratively running away from Forrest as they grow older. A memorable line in the movie, My mama always said youve got to put the past behind you before you can move on. He instinctively understood that carrying the past was detrimental to his present and future (Weber, 2010). When Gump proposed to Jenny, she declined and Forrest spends the next three and a half years running across America. Forrests run was a way for him to put his past behind him (Weber, 2010). As the movie emphasizes Forrest running from the past, it can also apply to people who still struggle in the past. While Forrests run was therapy to exercise some of his past pains, many people use exercise to relieve stress. And what is stress? Simply put, stress is worrying about the past and how its going to affect the future (Weber, 2010). In the movie, the idea of destiny plays a massive role throughout the film. For instance, Forrest and Jenny had two separate destinies with Forrest being successful in spite of his many tribulations, and Jenny ends up as a whore due to her twisted past. When the movie puts Forrest Gump in the Vietnam War, the starting scene shows it raining with soldiers advancing to the enemies positions. The film then cuts of the rain and then sequences to an intense, gruesome battle. Many of Lt. Dans squadron perished in the fight except for Forrest. As a bombing was expected to happen within the area, Forrest goes back into the battle to save any fallen comrades who are still alive. While running, Forrest encounters Lt. Dan with both his legs severely wounded, fallen on the ground and calling for a bombing run around the area. Forrest could not leave Lt. Dan and decided to take him to a safe zone away from the war. During this scene, Lt. Dan tells Forrest, We all have a destiny. Nothing just happ ens. Its all part of a plan! I had a destiny. I was supposed to die in the field with honor! That was my destiny, and you cheated me out of it! You understand what Im saying, Gump? This wasnt supposed to happen. Not to me. I had a destiny. I was Lieutenant Dan Taylor (Weber, 2010). Lt. Dan knew that because he wanted to be a soldier; his destiny would be to die for his country. This shows that the character already knew his purpose in life and it was clear what he wanted to achieve in his life. The idea of destiny is a tough concept to understand and many people can disagree on it. I feel as though people want to believe that there is a destiny, but people without a religion, such as atheists think differently. Atheists may believe that theres no God, no purpose and no point to life, but its pretty tough living that philosophy out in the day-to-day trenches (Cooke, 2012). Although religion may tie into the concept of having a destiny, it also gives us the motivation to live our lives no matter the limitations. Your purpose is bigger than any obstacle like physical limitations, financial circumstances, being fired or other failures. He and his twin brother (Jessie Garon who died at birth) were the sons of Vernon Elvis Presley and Gladys Love Smith Presley. Gladys Smith gave birth in two-room house built by her husband and her brother in -law. His way of life was rough in Tupelo, Mississippi where he was born. He was born during the Great Depression. Elvis and his parents attended the Assembly of God Church; the music and preaching registered very deeply in Elvis. In 1945, ten year old Elvis stands on a chair at a microphone and sings Old Sheep in a contest at the Mississippi Alabama Fair and Dairy Show, which was held in Tupelo. The peace keeping program explores the training needs and practices of four distinct groups involved in peace operations- US government agencies, the military, international civilian police, and non governmental organizations- that are expected to respond, separately or collaborate, to emergencies in affected areas around the world (Schoenhaus, 2002 p 9). The United States government has been said to have little ability today to respond rapidly to an international humanitarian emergency with a well-trained disaster response team. The delivery of adequate training to U. S. government personnel for the management of complex emergencies has been hampered by three distinct shortcomings; inadequate training content, inadequate training coverage, and the absence of a single command center with responsibility for improving training in complex emergency management (Schoenhaus, 2002 p 9). There is a stark contrast between the capabilities of the military and civilian communities at the beginnings of operations. The military in general has abundant resources and a clear mission under unified control. However this has not been the case with the civilian sector in peace operations, which is beset with multiple and conflicting agendas and generally enters the post intervention period lacking adequate resources, builds slowly, and spends an inordinate amount of time coordinating its own efforts rather than addressing the needs of the society in which it has intervened (Schoenhaus, 2002 p 9-10). The militaries role should be to lead from behind acknowledging the primacy of the primacy of the civilian goals and coordinating its support so that it becomes a continuation of the civilian effort by other means. (Bailey, 1982). The civilian success will be based on adapting the international standards to the new political environment and gaining public acceptance instead of re-establishing failed systems. The development of all fronts is necessary like infrastructural, economic, human and the leadership (Bankus 2002, p. 4) A system should be put in place to generate leaders who can articulate, evaluate, and solve problems. There must be a public debate on how the international community prepares its post intervention efforts. There should also be a core training curriculum for all actors involved in the humanitarian-relief and peace operations that are based on common, holistic visions. Such a curriculum would be built around enhanced human relations, interpersonal skills, communi cation, and management (Schoenhaus, 2002 p 9). Beyond this core training requirement, the individual agencies and organizations must recruit and train their staff to be experts in their areas of operations. At present, however there is no centralized training facility or a common curriculum that prepares civilians for the challenges they face in responding to international emergencies (Schoenhaus, 2002 p 9). Although both the US. Government agency and NGO communities recognize that there is need for common and more efficient training, the lack of commitment in terms of organizational culture, as well as the lack of time and resources, limits their efforts. The U. S. Government as suggested should take the lead in developing core training requirements and assign responsibilities to various agencies and other participants that could be trained at a common -use facility devoted to international training and response to complex emergencies. Doing this however requires significant resources, as well as a consensus among the agencies and the governments that support them (Felfer, 2002). At the same time, it will be necessary to anticipate and train for challenging scenarios besides training in such a way as to ensure that the proficiency of the military is not eroded in any way. The implication for this is that there will be need to ensure that the trained military personnel do not lose the skills they will have acquired. It will equally be important to consider the various rank-techniques comprise several levels of the structures of command. Last it will be important to take good care of the training equipment as well as employing the senior and experienced military commanders to facilitate the training programs (Smock, 1999). It is important note here that just like in any training program, time will play a crucial role in influencing the military training program. It therefore implies that both the training time as well as other resources will be limited thereby necessitating the need to structure the training program in a way that only the very important mission tasks are accomplished. This would mean that all the essential activities are first selected before conditions and benchmarks for each of the identified activities can be set under the guidance of the commander. The Agricultural Development Projects (ADPs) were first launched as viable projects in 1972 only two years after the end of civil war, when Nigeria was facing its first food and fibre shock. It started in Northern Nigerian towns of Gombe and Gusau with two pilot projects assisted by the World Bank. The projects were to be funded under a tripartite agreement involving World Bank 66%, Federal government 20% and State government 14% in addition to payments of salaries of local staff. The two main objectives of the ADPs were to increase food production, and to raise the income of small-scale farmers. The ondo state ADP was created after the success of the three (3) pilot projects in 1975 covering an LGA in 3 States. The success of the pilot schemes lead to expansion to other LGAs and States (Ondo state inclusive) in the late 70s and by 1989, all the states of the Federation were implementing the integrated approach. The Ondo state ADP is the implementation organ of the state ministry of agriculture. Ondo State Agricultural Development Project (ODSADEP) is an institution structurally divided into two Zones, four sub-Zones, and eighteen Blocks/LGAs containing 162 cells/circles.
